The IRIS project has been successfully completed, marking an important step toward strengthening agricultural development in Kosovo. During the closing workshop, project partners and stakeholders reflected on the achievements and the impact of the initiative on irrigation infrastructure in the Dukagjini region.

With the activation of the rehabilitated system, more than 4,000 hectares of agricultural land will now benefit from reliable and regular irrigation. The project was implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development of Kosovo and financed through a grant from the European Union, administered by the World Bank.

This strategic investment aims to increase the resilience of the agricultural sector through the rehabilitation and modernization of existing irrigation infrastructure, including primary and secondary canals, pumping stations, and water distribution structures at the farm level.

The project has contributed to reducing water losses, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening the institutional management of irrigation systems. The modernization of the infrastructure enables more efficient and reliable water distribution for farmers.

Thousands of farmers in the region are direct beneficiaries, gaining improved access to irrigation that allows them to cultivate higher value crops, expand cultivated land, and stabilize agricultural production.

Beyond its economic impact, the project has also strengthened local technical and administrative capacities, laying the foundation for long term rural development.

In this way, IRIS represents an important investment linking infrastructure development with improved livelihoods and the sustainable growth of agriculture in Kosovo.

As part of a World Bank mission, the IRIS Project conducted a field visit to closely observe the progress of works on the rehabilitation of the Radoniqi–Dukagjini irrigation system.

During the visit, the pumping stations in Qerim and Janosh were inspected, where the execution of electrical and technical works was assessed. The pumping stations have been fully rehabilitated under the IRIS Project.

The visit also included inspections of basin locations and the contractor’s workshop to ensure that the works comply with project standards. In Prizren, the administrative offices were visited to review the renovation and rehabilitation works being carried out under the project.

Approximately 90 percent of the works under the first contract have been completed, including electrical works and the SCADA system, which is currently being finalized within the planned timeline.

As part of the visit, the overall work carried out at the Radoniqi–Dukagjini offices in Xërxë was also inspected, with a focus on operational management and the implementation of planned activities.

As a result of the project’s completion, it is expected that an additional 4,000 hectares of agricultural land will be brought under irrigation.

The IRIS Project is implemented under a partnership program between the European Commission and the World Bank, through a Donor Trust Fund Agreement, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Development of the Republic of Kosovo. The project aims to improve water-use efficiency and increase agricultural productivity in Kosovo.

Two community meetings were organized by RIC Radoniqi, in collaboration with PIU/MAFRD, in the Gjakova region to discuss the irrigation rehabilitation project. The first meeting was held in Novoselle e Ulet village in November 2024, and the second took place in Qerim village in January 2025. The goal of both meetings was to inform residents about the project’s objectives, planned activities, and the benefits of the improved irrigation system.

Attendees expressed strong support for the project, particularly emphasizing the importance of addressing the region’s irrigation challenges. The meetings also provided an opportunity for residents to meet the works contractor and supervisor, gaining a deeper understanding of the project’s execution and addressing any concerns.

Residents were reminded that they could contact RIC Radoniqi and the PIU for any concerns through the grievance mechanism, ensuring open communication throughout the project. Additionally, five local residents were voluntarily appointed to the Community Engagement Group, which will closely monitor the project’s implementation and report any concerns.

In conclusion, the meetings fostered community involvement, mutual understanding, and collaboration, which are essential for the successful implementation of the project.
